Use it by itself with a long middle name. Some names are short, and while as a rule I don't like short girls' names, I do like Maude. To me, it's gone from ugly to charming.

I think it's great by itself. Maude and Matilda are very different names to me though I know one derives from the other. I love Maude and one of my favorite combos uses it as a middle name - Julia Maude.

I like it very much, for the reasons I've just posted in my thread above (I promise I was going to post it before I saw your post, I'm not just copying!). It's also a very nice purple colour to me, perhaps due to its visual similarity to the word mauve, or a royal blue colour, depending on what name it's paired with.

I think Matilda "Maude" is adorable, and I've thought about it before myself. I do like just Maude, though. I'm sure a pet name or nickname would form naturally if it felt too short IRL.

I think Maude is just fine on its own. I think the fact that it's short is part of its charm.

It's a big stretch to use Maude as short for Matilda, because Maude in itself is a shortened version of another name, magdalene.
I really hate Matilda, but even Matilda is not as ugly as Maude.

I would just use it by itself. Who cares if it's short?

Its a little old fashioned sounding. Its better as a diminutive of Matilda.
