Avalon and Atlantis
Apparently both Avalon and Atlantis are used as first names. How do you like them? Are they usable at all?
I have a weak spot for Avalon, but Atlantis sounds pretentious.
Does the sea exist
Because of our longing?

I've loved Avalon for ages! It sounds so perfect.
Atlantis to me is the name of a place, not a person. It sounds pretentious, and also stupid.

I had a head of department once whose son was something unmemorable and daughter was Avalon. That was what they called her - no nn. I've forgotten most of the story, but they were an Irish family originally and the husband chose Avalon because of something related to music, whether a singer, a group or a song I no longer know.
I dislike geographical names in general, but mythological ones are worse so I'd find both Avalon and Atlantis unusable in the extreme!

I like Avalon. I think it's fanciful and cheesy, but it gives me warm feelings and I like the story.
Atlantis just doesn't sound namey to me. It's very much a location. It doesn't sound pretentious, but more like its trying to be pretentious and failing

I don't think either of them sound pretentious. To me, they just sound equal amounts of flaky (I don't like place names in general, so I guess that's why).
Avalon reminds me of...
-Avalon Organics (a company that sells skin care and hair care products)
-Names like Ava and Aveline
Atlantis reminds me of...
-Stargate Atlantis (TV show) and other science fiction
-Names like Alanis and Atalanta
Beyond that, I guess they're usable? They sound okay, and people use them.

I agree with you, I think Atlantis sounds pretentious. I've never seen it used.
I like Avalon, but not enough to ever consider using it in real life! I've seen it used in birth announcements, and I think it's appeal is because of the popular "Ava" part. And perhaps because of the whole fantasy / myth connection.

I find Avalon more pretentious because it's fantastical. But although it's flakey, it's very namey and I don't mind it.
Atlantis is less fantastical, and so less pretentious, and I don't mind it either. But the joke about him/her being lost beneath the sea is just about too much.
And it's flakier than Avalon.

I don't like them as names. Especially Atlantis, seems silly as a name.
Hi !!!!
I like Avalon for a girl!!
I think it is unique and remember ancient legends.
Atlantis...no.
I prefer Atlas...but for a boy.

I like Avalon but where I like its the name of a golf course
I actually know an Avalon. I really like the name. It's so beautiful and I think perhaps with the Ava and Avery craze it seems more usable than before? I also like Albion a lot.
Atlantis I don't like. To me it sounds like an insect. It also does seem to be pretentious in a way that Avalon isn't, though I'm not sure why.

Avalon could make a very pretty middle name:
Maria Avalon
Julia Avalon
Laura Avalon
Verity Avalon
Elizabeth Avalon
Rose Avalon
Fiona Avalon
I wish I was making this up, but when I worked in a theme park a parent waltzed up to me and announced that their son Atlantis was missing. I reported it onto managers, but to this day I have no idea if they were winding me up or not.
