German / Swedish area, especially in small towns. There is a name for this way of thinking -
Will Farrell talked about it. No one wants to stick out, everyone wants to fit in. My in-laws are very much like that. Anything 'different' is a way of getting attention. They're pretty insular. It's really hard to explain, because they aren't the norm anymore, they're a bit of a throw back. But the throw back is around enough that it's still an issue?
IDK. They don't dye their hair, they don't have piercings - even ear piercings, etc. It really is influenced by the Swedish culture, though.
