Maya

I have always pronounced it as MY-uh. All the Mayas I've known have pronounced it that way. I've never heard anyone say MAY-uh.
The logical part of my brain had be pronouncing this (and Maia) as MAY-ah for as long as I can remember.
But then I heard the name MY-ah and really liked it so wanted to know how it could be spelt. I have to admit, being told Maya and Maia confused me a little, but now I've trained myself to see Maya and hear MY-ah in my head.

Every Maya I know says My-a
I say My-uh
I say My-uh, because that's how the one Maya I've met pronounced it, and I've heard it on TV that way (plus, it just seems intuitive because it looks like Mayan). I've never heard anyone pronounce it May-a.

I have never heard Maya pronounced "May-a," but I suppose I also don't think I've met any "My-uhs" who spell it that way. I know a Maia and a Maiya. I'd definitely say "My-uh" and would expect that's how it's said.
My-uh is all I've ever heard it pronounced as. My all-time favorite name! (May-a is pretty, too, though.)
