I think I would go with Cara as a nn for Caroline. Maybe Careen, Carine, or Carys.
My sister's middle name is Carrie (after our great-grandmother who was born in 1901). Neither of us have ever liked it very much. One, because it is a little dated, but also because it's basically the word "carry", so it's like there's an implication of carrying a burden...and then there's the movie/Stephen King novel.
I like Callie (it makes me think of calla lilies), but it doesn't sound like a natural shortening of Caroline to me.
