Carrie vs. Callie
Replies
Don't enjoy either of them much. Maybe just Cal?
I was just thinking about this the other day and came to the conclusion that I don't prefer either! I do like both; I just don't have a strong feeling either way. While pregnant with my youngest, I wanted to name her Caroline and call her Cara. I still like that although Caro has really grown on me. BTW, my dd has gone through a few phases where she's toyed with the idea of being called by her mn, Caroline (Caroline, no nn). Most of her friends and teachers have stuck with calling her Anna and for that, I'm rather relieved since she's gone through several phases in the last few years. ;-) I told her when she's 18 and if she still feels this way, then I'll take her more seriously.
I don't think Carrie is too dated at all. It's actually very sweet.

Callie is the superior nickname.
Carrie was my go-to name as a child, for pretend characters, stuffies, cats, whatever. I do think it's dated, and slightly tainted by Stephen King. But it's still okay. It's not too dated for an adult to use. Callie still seems more childish to me, although it's OK too. It's a little bit artificial when it's from Caroline.
Caroline is so flowy to say that I don't think it really needs a nickname, tbh. I guess if it were my name, and people were resisting saying it, and trying to nickname me, I might call myself Cari or Cara.

I prefer Carrie. Callie feels too lightweight to me.
I think Carrie is sweet and gently old fashioned. (Maybe that's my love of Little House shining through.) Callie feels far trendier, but Carrie doesn't feel overly dated by comparison.

I think I would go with Cara as a nn for Caroline. Maybe Careen, Carine, or Carys.
My sister's middle name is Carrie (after our great-grandmother who was born in 1901). Neither of us have ever liked it very much. One, because it is a little dated, but also because it's basically the word "carry", so it's like there's an implication of carrying a burden...and then there's the movie/Stephen King novel.
I like Callie (it makes me think of calla lilies), but it doesn't sound like a natural shortening of Caroline to me.

I guess I like Carrie better. I don't like Callie for any reason, I know that much, it sounds frumpy and flabby. Carrie isn't as popular today as Caroline or Callie, but it has a prettiness that Callie will never have, and it's happier than Caroline.
You could always split the difference and use Carlie/Carly.
