I want to like Clara because of its nineteenth century quaintness. But I can't help it, it makes me think of a cow. It's funny that Miss Bow had such an un-sexy name.I don't like Colleen because it's faux Irish.And Mary, we all know I despise Mary because it's so generic. Far too generic to make one automatically think of Miss Pickford.

If you do not mind my question - why is the name Mary so generic? I am only curious as to why a name as old as Mary (and any derivatives) is thought to be generic. Thanks

Because it was so common for centuries. It couldn't be generic if it weren't old, which is not to say that all old names are generic. It's a combination of overuse and that overuse being spread over a very long time. I also think that John is generic.Of course, this is just my opinion.
