HelpJulian, Julius, Jillian, Julie & Jill - unisex nicknames?
Probably the best known sources for the names Julius & Julian are from the famed Roman emperors. Many spelling variants combine "Julie with Anne", with little variance from Julian, and are frequently used to name females. Jillian is yet another variant more exclusively retained by females, yet this variance is guarded with greater fortification - and perhaps with greater ferocity because of the "Jack and Jill" nursery rhyme. Is there anything wrong with the name Jillian for a boy with the (occasional) nickname Jill? Is there anything wrong with the (occasional) nick-name Julie for a boy? I saw the names Julian and Jillian on Diet Coke bottles this week - and on a few Behind the Name texts, which led me to reconsider this - which I've considered previously.

Julian and Julius are ALL male to me. Julianne spelling makes all the difference as far as gender to me.
All of the Julian and Julius people I have met (my husband included) would rather go by Jules than Julie any day. I consider Jules to be a totally unisex nickname (I have known plenty of both genders), but not Julian or Julius.
Jillian has always been feminine to me. I have never considered it, nor heard it considered, as a unisex name. I would have trouble seeing it on a boy.
If you really analyze it on a basic level - sure.. you can use any name on a boy. I don't think there is anything WRONG with using these names for boys. I personally see no appeal in doing so however.
Julius and Julian are such classy names for boys, and Julianne, Jillian and Julia are so elegant for girls that I feel using them for opposite genders detracts from the appeal rather than enhances it.

Jillian feels like a girl's name to me. As do Jill and Julie. Jules, though, feels unisex.
I don't think there's anything at all wrong with a boy or man choosing to call himself Julie or Jill if that's what he likes. I know a boy who occasionally calls himself Jackie, for example, and that's totally fine, because it's his idea. I would, however, be uncomfortable with someone else imposing a nickname like that on a boy.
