The purple violet is the provincial flower for the province where I live, New Brunswick.
As I expect you know, they are pretty flowers (and there are white violets, too), but only pretty growing; they're so small and frail that if you pick them, they die quickly.
So I find the name kind of frail and pale too.Also, I'd have a tendency to say "Vi'let",leaving out the "o".
I know of a baby girl named Violet, grand-daughter of a friend. This child was nearly named Harlow, which, if it's not a family name(it wasn't), I don't like, so Violet was the better choice there.

Yeah, the frail part and the saying 'shrinking violet" bother me, too. Part of the reason that I wouldn't use it, despite finding it so pretty.
