Avonlea
Avonlea (ah-von-LEE)?Avonlea was a fictional community used in the Anne of Green Gables books.Do you believe that people not familiar with the Anne of Green Gables books will pronounce the name incorrectly - such as ah-von-LEE-ah? I'm in Canada and I'm quite confident that the majority of Canadians are familiar with the books and also the tv show based on the books called 'Road To Avonlea'.I think it could make a pretty name - it has a very romantic feel to me.What are your thoughts?

Brilliant books, no pronunciation issues at all, silly name for a human.

I think the books / show are so familiar that it refers to them too strongly to make a good personal name.JMO, though. It'd be decent and nice, and it is romantic & pretty - just sort of imitate-y. No biggie, I bet she'd get compliments. I don't think people would mispronounce it and if they did ... so what. Just correct 'em. "It's AV-on-lee, like the place in the story" People have to correct name pronunciations all the time but you generally only have to do it once per person.

I came across this name just yesterday! I was reading this woman's blog and she mentioned her four-year-old dd, Avonlea Rose. It's different and not unattractive. The nn Avi is cute too (what the woman called her dd). Re: the pronunciation, I think most people should get it quickly enough. Even if they've never read the books, etc., most of us have encountered it at some point or another.

I think everyone would pronounce it correctly. It does have a pretty sound to it but to me it reminds me either of a place (though I know place names are popular so it wouldn't be that weird) or the makeup brand Avon. I don't know if that brand is just where I live or not though.

That's a consideration. I know people have heard of Anne of Green Gables, but not so sure about Avonlea (absolutely love that movie; never got through the book). But then again, people mispronounce names ALL the time, even simple ones. I don't think you should base your "like" of this name of pronounciation if you really love it. Besides, the "wrong" pronounciation doesn't sound half bad. :)

I am obsessed with Lucy Maud Montgomery and have all of the DVDs of the 90s show "Road to Avonlea." Okay, well, season 1-5, but I intend to eventually get 6 and 7. That said, as a person's name, I think it's over-the-top and silly sounding. You should look at the names of the characters in that show for inspiration, though.Felicity
