What do you think of the name Ionela Enescu?
Pronunciation: ee-oh-nel-la ae-naes-coo (ae is like A in cat). I came with this pseudonym for a poetry contest and would like to know what do you think of it :)PS: You can hear these names at www.hearnames.com , just type them in the "Search" box :)

It definitely sounds very Romanian. I think Ionela is cute :)

Hope it doesn't cause much trouble :p That -escu is killer.

Very extravagant, exotic, regal. I like it. Possible nn Nellie or Ela would be really cute

Beth, cool nicknames! :3 I like Nell too, it's good if you want to be gender-neutral.
I didn't think it sounded regal, but reading it again I agree with you :)

Too difficult to pronounce. I adore Io- names, but when I'm looking at an author's name (especially when it's a pseudonym), I like something that sticks with you and is easy to say. No one wants to fumble over the name when they brag about having read your poetry ;)

Becki, you're more than right; if I went to publish in English I'd choose another name. But here in Brazil we have names like Isabela and Gabriela and surnames like Tedesco, so they don't sound so strange. Maybe in the US I'd write as Nellie Ernest :)

I think it may sound really weird on the US, but where I live it sounds just a little :) Funny, isn't it?
"Enescu" would mean something like "son (or daughter) of Aeneas". The "-escu" is like "-son" in English, "-sohn" in German and "-vich/-ovna" in Russian.

Ionela is kind of cool, but Ensecu sounds weird.

Romanian? It's cool. I think Ionela is quite pretty. For some reason, it makes me think of Ionescu, like, the playwright, which is a pretty good association, especially as it's a literary pseudonym.

You have a good memory, I've almost forgotten of Ionescu :p It means something like "son of John".
Hey, you people can hear these two names at www.hearnames.com. That's the Web making our lives easier :3

Ionela sounds very pretty, but in the font here it looks a lot like "lonela" which looks a lot like "lonely". Obviously not really a big deal, but that was my first impression.I'm a bit confused by your explanation for Enescu. "ae" doesn't typically sound like the A in cat - it's usually more like "ay". I would be surprised if the E at the beginning of Enescu was pronounced like the A in cat. If so, I would spell it Anescu.I would pronounce Enescu like ee-NESS-coo.

Emmita, you're right. It happens that I'm not a native English speaker, so I didn't know how to transcribe the open E that is used in Romanian. The closer I found was the "A" sound, but the "E" in Enescu is like the Latin ae sound, or "ai" in "hair". Thanks for replying :)
