I know one, whose real name is Leonore.

As a nickname, I'd fully support Leo on a girl. I love boy nicknames on girls so much! Leontyne would work. Leona too.

On a cat, why not? Cats have the sass to pull that kind of wacky thing off :P

But I do think it'd be nicer if she had a full name (Leopoldine, or Leontine, or Leonie or something) which had Leo as a nn. In fact, I think that's kind of cute in a GP-fashion on a person, so if I saw it on a cat I'd probably have kittens... metaphorical ones, of course.

Leo is hilarious on any kind of cat! But being able to call/refer to Leo as Leontyne takes it to a whole new dimension of gloriousness.

I think it's doable with a full name such as Leona, Leonie, Leontina, etc. Alone, it seems too masculine. Then again, this is a cat we're talking about. She certainly doesn't care one way or the other. :-) I'm curious, though. Does she have stripes?

For a cat or as a nickname, sure. As the given name for a female human, dear god NO.

Ooh, I really like it. For a human, I think I prefer it as a nickname, but it depends on the person. I can definitely see it as a full name on a girl too. If I used it it would probably be short for Leonora or Leora or something.

It sounds like a mistake. They thought she was a boy when she was a kitten ... then "Leo" went into heat! Haw, haw! *eyeroll* (on a cat it doesn't matter)

I'm afraid I hate those kinds of nicknames a lot. I think pretty much what RoxStar does, only she said it nicer than I would.

I hate it as a full name. It could be cute as a nickname. I don't especially like Leontyne personally, I like Leonora very much.

Why not Leona? That's basically the same name as Leo, except for a girl.

Definitely called it a few years ago. Used it as a character's fake-name (she chose it herself, her real name was Rachel).

I kinda like it, but I definitely want credit for it any time it's used, so that's kind of a problem for me. And it does have the vibe of annoying novelty associated with it.

Well, seeing as how it's a cat, and cats rarely ever admit to even having a name, much less whether the name is used for the opposite sex cat (and cats never suffer from gender confusion issues) and considering that I don't happen to think that pets ever need "full" names, and also taking into account the fact that Leo means lion .... I don't see anything wrong with it. It could also be that Leo's people couldn't tell if she was a male or female as a kitten (sometimes tricky) and by the time they found out differently, Leo had already stuck.
Edited: However, Leo does not make a good name for a female human. On a human it sounds like something Leona would insist on being called as a moody, self-styled "tomboy" teenager, to be contrary, and would eventually grow out of.

Leona or Leola would also work, and I think that's a great idea!
I love out of the box gender naming:) totally unexpected but adorable!
And I think it would totally work on a person too!
