Jupiter & Jove
Last night my husband and I were goofing off and he decided to name our child like a celebrity - by choosing a random word out of the dictionary. (Apple, Ace, North...) So he closed his eyes and opened the dictionary, I pointed ... and I landed on Jove, in the definition of Jupiter.
I'm thinking that the names aren't that bad. A little OTT, yes, but not bad. I've met a few Apollos, why not a Jove or Jupiter? Thoughts? (Obviously we're not doing this, we're having a girl and a female Jove would be a bit too odd for me.)

Jove might work okay on a boy, but Jupiter is way too... spacy.
Noooooo. I'd have trouble taking a Jove or Jupiter seriously. If I met a Jupiter I'd wonder what on earth his parents were smoking.

Jupiter seems kind of silly and pompous to me. I once knew a guy who went by Jove, his last name, so that seems more real to me.
One of the reasons I like Juniper is that it's similar to Jupiter. I think Jupiter's great.
Well, at this point everyone on the board could guess my opinion on this. I literally just bought a book about Jupiter, to accompany my book about Saturn. Dammit, I think planet names are kind of cool! The symbolism behind planets is so rich and Jupiter's a great symbol. Jove on its own diminishes the planetary symbolism, though, and makes it kind of just "king of the gods."
Alfred Hitchcock had a young detective named Jupiter
I don't remember much of the series beyond that. I, too, prefer Jupiter to Jove

Well, Jupiter is too out there (no pun intended). But Jove is a recognized name and if you didn't want to use it as a first name, I think it would make a good middle name for a girl. Miriam Jove? Liora Jove? I don't think it's bad at all.
I think it works. It's far from the worst celebrity name I've heard.
