Way back when I was a pre-teen and young teenager, I decided that Chad was the only boys' name that I liked and that if I ever had a son, his name would be Chad. When I had to write a short story in eighth grade, I made the name of the cute guy male character Chad. Chad Fordwick, that was his name. LOL.
Back then, Chad seemed "handsome" and "strong" to me, but that changed and I began to see it as a "dumb jock" name. It didn't help that about eight years ago, my daughter knew a really jerky guy, whom I never liked, named Chad.
So I'm curious as to others' impressions. What do you think of Chad?

Despise it. It just kind of falls from the tongue with a clunk. There's not much substance to it and it seems airy in a bad way.

The only Chad I've ever known was a kid I had a HUGE crush on when I was maybe 14. He fit pretty much all the stereotypes mentioned (blond, WASP, jerk) but he wasn't a jock, more of a semi-geek who just happened to be cute. I knew him from a drama group I was in and performed plays with.
The name is a bad association for me. I was the most awkward teen girl ever -not only socially, but I was a scrawny thing with Coke-bottle glasses, bad hair and acne, the whole nine yards. I tried to "ask him out" but got rejected. The VERY NEXT DAY he decided to go with the most outgoing, obnoxious, overdeveloped girl in the group. I was very intimidated by this girl and she and her friends constantly bullied me. I was so upset. I am 30 and still haven't forgotten this.
So yeah, Chad sucks.

That's interesting that you knew a Chandler "Chad." As a child, I thought that Chad was a nickname for Chadler, and that most Chads were probably named Chadler. I must have misheard the name Chandler as Chadler unless I actually did meet someone named Chadler or perhaps someone named Chandler who went by Chad. I kind of doubt that, though. I probably just misheard Chandler somewhere.

I think it sounds like something you'd cough up...it is one of the most unattractive names out there IMO. I don't understand how it was ever so popular.

It never seemed jocky or handsome to me. It has always seemed dorky. Probably because the Chad in my school was a dork. Reminds me of "cad." And hanging chad.

I used to almost like it, but I don't particularly care for it now. It sounds like a surfer bum or "dumb jock" name to me. It also reminds me of chattering teeth. I don't recall if I have ever known a Chad, but I can imagine a jerk named Chad.

It does sound like a stereotypical blond guy name. Three of the four Chads I knew were blond, and the fourth one was black. And two of the three white Chads were real jerks (and both of the jerk Chads were WASPy).

The jerky Chad whom my daughter knew was blond. I don't know whether or not he was WASPy, though---I can't remember his last name, and don't know from which countries his ancestors came from or how recently they did.

It's kind of like the male version of Heather; it was way popular for a short while and then fell way off in popularity and is now dated. Yeah, it kind of is a stereotypical dumb-jock name, I guess that's what happens to a lot of the "OMG, he's so hawt!" names, like Brad and Lance.

I kinda agree with you on the "dumb jock" thing. Chad does sound like that kind of name.
