I'm the same way. I really dislike Charles, but Charlie is quite nice. I think it can work on its own, especially in this day and age. I know a little boy named Charlie in full and to my knowledge it really hasn't caused any problems. I think if you use Charlie, you should pair it with a more formal middle name to ground it.
