Charlie
I'm growing a fondness for this name. So does Charlie work on it's own?Charles is a family name going back a few generations so I like the connection but I really DISLIKE Charles and would literally NEVER call a son "Charles in full" if I ever happened to pass it down. How about some combo ideas with Charlie as a FN?

I do like Charlie, especially for a boy. It's a very popular name but, for me, that doesn't matter - it has a nice sound and can grow up with the baby.Charlie Elijah

I don't think so, I think it definitely needs to be Charles. Charlie feels too youthful and unprofessional. I personally love Charles as it is, sorry you don't! (And Charles Xavier is a fun association.)Also, Charlie:

Whether you do or don't like Charles is not the point. People will persist in believing that his "real" name is Charles, ask for proof that it isn't, forget they asked and ask again and so on and on ... what is so bad about naming him Charles and calling him Charlie?Once I met a Chip who was the son of Chuck and the grandson of Charlie. All three of them were Charles on the documentation. I wish I knew what happened to Chip - did he ever marry? Did he have a son?

How is NOT liking the name not the point??? Would you give your child a name you straight up disliked?
I met a Benji before who was proud that is name was just Benji, not Benjamin. He used the opportunity to prove it (by showing me his license) as a conversation starter/pick-up line so I don't see what's so damning about that

As much as I hate Benjamin, Benji by itself is so much worse. I think the only merit in it is that it could be used as a conversation starter/ pick-up line. It's way worse than Charlie by itself. It's just...so....so...bad. I'm sorry, I really am just being struck right now by how BAD Benji on its own is. *Shudder*

I'm the same way. I really dislike Charles, but Charlie is quite nice. I think it can work on its own, especially in this day and age. I know a little boy named Charlie in full and to my knowledge it really hasn't caused any problems. I think if you use Charlie, you should pair it with a more formal middle name to ground it.

I have the same problemI adore Charlie as a fn for a boy. It is probably in my top 3 at the moment but I'm not sure I can abide by putting it on a birth certificate. At the same time, I really dislike Charles and I don't know how I would go putting that on a birth certificate either. I think it definitely can work on its own and I know men named Charlie and it doesn't seem juvenile on them (like Ricky or Petey or Johnny does). At the same time, I wouldn't want my kid coming back to me when he is grown and asking why I didn't just give him a formal fn.I love Charlie so much that I have kind of resigned myself to using Charles as a fn but I'd always call him Charlie and introduce him as Charlie. If he decided to go by Charles as an adult, I wouldn't like it particularly but Charles is a perfectly fine name that would stand him in good stead, just not my pick. Charlie Thomas
Charlie Oisin
Charlie Sean
Charlie Oscar
Charlie Jasper
Charlie Tobias
Charlie Vincent
Charlie Robert
Charlie Daniel
Charlie Xavier
Charlie William
Charlie Jackson
Charlie Frederick
Charlie Sinclair

I'm with you on disliking Charles and liking Charlie.
I almost named my son Charles "Charlie." Really came pretty close.I don't think there's anything wrong with using Charlie on its own. But I personally would not want to be "just" Charlie even on paper, if I were a guy.
Like, when he gets married and says his full name. It sounds cooler if he says Charles and not Charlie. Even though I don't like the name Charles I think there is some real merit in having the formal name. Sure most Charlies never use it, but some might like to have Charles for formalities. And I have known one Charles who hated Charlie, and went by Charles always. If I had thought of him while considering the name, I might have dismissed it!My son would have been Charles "Charlie" Bruce. I'm not much on making combos. If I had to make up a combo, I'd make up something eccentric or catchy, like Charlie Raven or Charlie Marlon.

I knew a Charles nn Charlie in middle school and I remember thinking that his name was smarmy and awful...but then again, I also thought the boy himself was a twerp...Now, I really like the name Charlie. Think its adorable. Don't know when or why that happened. And I do like Charlie on its own, rather than as a nn for Charles; using a two-syllable nn for one-syllable first names always seemed counter-intuitive to me...

Sorry, but I thik Charlie is best as a nickname for Charles. Charlie is a fine nickname and 99.9 percent of the time that's what he'd be called anyway unless he specified differently. But as the full given name it is a bit childish and downmarket. Charlie as a nn ages well, but as a full name, no.

Charles is a really stuffy name. You're right about that. I think Charlie can work on its own. It's one of the few nicknames I prefer as a full name, because I really don't like Charles much either. Charlie Dominic
Charlie Bernard
Charlie Edmund
Charlie Patrick
Charlie MatthewIt's kinda hard to pair as a first name though.

I can't stand it when someone uses Charlie on its own. It's not dignified, and a baby boy who will grow into a little boy and then into a man deserves a dignified name on his birth certificate. If you hate Charles so much that you can't use it, even with Charlie as a nickname, I think that you should forgo Charles and Charlie altogether.

I'm normally one who opts for full names over nicknames but I just don't see what's so UNdignified about Charlie. I don't actually know ANY Charles who actually go by Charles so to me Charlie feels just as perfectly suited on a young boy as it does a professional man
