Ok. My first thought was Masahiro (kanji for either victory or correct followed by kanji for either generous or wide/open/spacious), but now I'll see what else might fit...

I'd give Gilbert a 6, I think, where "5" is neutral. (ETA: The more I think about him, I'm bumping him up to a solid 7.) I like him, but not really enough to consider using him. His meaning is lovely and he does feel "friendlier", perhaps, than some of the other "bert" names.
Robert and Elbert are family names for me and I like them both, though prefer Robert. I knew a Delbert who was a very nice young man...he'd be around thirty now, I think. But my favorite, most-loved "bert" has long been Lambert. And almost no one else likes him.

-1. It's one of the dorkiest names I can think of, and it doesn't have any good nicknames.
I prefer the french pronunciation for -bert names. But pronouncing it the English way I'd rate Gilbert a 7. I like it but I don't love it. It has a very nerdy old-fashioned appeal. I prefer the nn Gil over the nn Bert.
I think Delbert and Robert are some of the best -bert names. I think I prefer Gilbert over Albert.
An odd note I really like the name Delwyn / Delwin. I met a guy in his late 50's in one of my college classes with this name and he was a really cool guy. I think it was the first time I had heard the name and I thought it was pretty awesome. It is a very old-fashioned name but I feel like it is one of those names that should have a renewal of use.
(Hmmm I was looking into Delwin, it seems that he died two years after I had that class with him. Sad since he was only 58 when he died and I can't find what he died of. I remember we'd often talk about food and he'd talk about how much he loved his wifes cooking. ^_^)

I usually don't like -bert names, but I like Albert. But then there is Hubert and Gilbert too, and I kinda like them to, mostly because they sound so geeky. I picture Hubert and Gilbert sitting alone eating their lunch in school, wearing brown clothes from the 80's and whatever. BUt I think I'd give Gilbert a 6, or maybe a 7.
