I'm almost certain the ballerina's name is said with a g like in in gelding, not like in gesso. I'd assume others would pronounce it that way. I do think of gel and jealousy when I think it's pronounced with a J sound. I think you could get away with pronouncing it GHEL-zee, but JEL-see would be weird.I thought the name Tenley was about as unheard of as Gelsey and owes all its exposure to Tenley Albright, and that doesn't hurt the name Tenley. I don't see how Gelsey is much different - except that Kirkland has a tarnished image. I don't think it's very feminine sounding (I see Kelsey as unisex, and prefer it for a male) but it's not awful. I wouldn't worry at all about it being mistaken for anything else. Tons of ordinary names get mistaken for each other and it's not a big deal. I don't think it sounds dated either. The main problems are the pronunciation (if you want it with a J sound), and Kirkland's image.
