Gelsey
I really like Gelsey, despite the fact that it's definitely not my style, and I typically avoid names whose only association is a single famous person.
General thoughts on Gelsey (JEL-see)? I'm not into ballet at all...would that make Gelsey an even weirder choice? Would a Gelsey be miserable, her name constantly mistaken for Chelsea or Kelsey? For that matter, what do you think of Chelsea? Too dated?

I used to know a Gelsey!
I haven't seen her (or the name) in a very long time.
I like it. It's different.
Nah, Chelsea's not that dated, but I may be saying that because I know two young ones.

Thanks everyone!
Between the pronunciation issues and the overall negative reaction, you've given me plenty to think about.
I'm sure Gelsey is a passing fancy. :)

I don't really care for it. One of my least favorite letters in a name is G, and my own name is Kelsey, and I quite dislike it, so it makes sense that I don't like Gelsey either. Since most people aren't familiar with Gelsey, I do think they'll just think it's Kelsey or Chelsea when heard. And yes, I do find Chelsea dated.
I'm not sure how well known Kirkland is outside the dance comunity so I don't think it wouod be that odd or automatically associated. I also don't think it will mistaken too much for Kelsey or Chelsea. IMO those are a bit 90s anyway, Gelsey is definitely a fresher option. As for the pronunciation, I have always heard it with a hard G. Not really a fan with the soft G. It sounds too much like jealousy.
I'm almost certain the ballerina's name is said with a g like in in gelding, not like in gesso. I'd assume others would pronounce it that way. I do think of gel and jealousy when I think it's pronounced with a J sound. I think you could get away with pronouncing it GHEL-zee, but JEL-see would be weird.
I thought the name Tenley was about as unheard of as Gelsey and owes all its exposure to Tenley Albright, and that doesn't hurt the name Tenley. I don't see how Gelsey is much different - except that Kirkland has a tarnished image. I don't think it's very feminine sounding (I see Kelsey as unisex, and prefer it for a male) but it's not awful. I wouldn't worry at all about it being mistaken for anything else. Tons of ordinary names get mistaken for each other and it's not a big deal. I don't think it sounds dated either. The main problems are the pronunciation (if you want it with a J sound), and Kirkland's image.

My initial thought is that I want to pronounce it was a "G" sound rather than a "J" sound.
I don't like it. With my mistaken pronunciation is sounds masculine. With your pronunciation it to me sounds like "jealousy"

Yeah, I think it's too close to Kelsey/Chelsey. How about Delsey? Still in the same general area, but not as easily confused because the first letter is more distinctive sounding. Yes? No?
It's terrible to the nth degree. I don't know what value is n, but it isn't good.
I'm kind of glad you don't know what famous person I'm referring to. :) That makes it feel more usable.
Gelsey Kirkland is the only RL Gelsey I know of. She is a famous and incredibly talented ballerina who partnered with Mikhail Baryshnikov and is now a teacher and choreographer (unfortunately, she was also famous for eating disorders and drug addiction, though I guess she's turned around). I thought her name was pronounced with a soft G, but a quick but a quick Google search tells me it might be a hard G. Hmm.

Gelsey Kirkland, ballerina. Pronounced GHEL-see
I am offended. Gross.
Uh, what?
Ah, I took too long to type. Thanks, mirfak, for the info!
