Good choice. Basil is an underrated gem of a name. It's known, but not overly used. The only slight down-side is here in the U.S. it might be pronounced as "BAY-zil," like the herb. Hate that. Basil ("BAZ-l") is tall, dark and handsome. It has a slightly exotic / Eastern intrigue to it. Growing up I used to watch a lot of old Hollywood movies. Basil Rathbone as Sherlock Holmes was a favorite. That's where I began to love the name.

I think it's a little stuffy, but it's not bad. I definitely prefer BAZ-il rather than BAYZ-il.

I like it only when it's pronounced like the herb. I detest "bazzle".

I've always liked it. It's very sophisticated and tweedy.

It's one of my least favorite names for a boy. I think it's super pretentious, and it sounds smarmy and weak. I can't imagine a Basil I'd want to date or hang around with. He sounds like a whiny guy born with a silver spoon in his mouth. Blehh.Sorry! :( ETA: I do really like Vasiliy, the Russian form.
