Re: gushy compliments

This isn't a comment on your opinion of Ever or anything. I just feel the need to say something about the "Everyone compliments my name" argument that I hear a lot.
People do that to names they don't like!
To save face!

Yeah, I've given plenty of compliments on names I don't like, mostly to counteract the expression of disgust I'm sure is spread across my features. There's no doubt a percentage of the people I mentioned weren't sincere, but most of them didn't ping my fake-dar. I felt like there were a lot of genuine "ooh, I like that!" reactions.
You know a surefire way to tell if someone is faking it? When they use the word "interesting" to describe a name. I've done it, myself.

Me too! Or "That's really unusual!" accompanied by a smile that shows all your teeth.
Oh no! People often say my name is very pretty, are they just lying to me?!
They also say they know a dog with my name.
A lot.

They say it's very pretty primarily so they can justify telling you about the dog.
edit: As opposed to saying it's pretty to "save face."
edit again: Trust me, I know how every single person works.
