I can't stand using just nicknames as first names. I really really dislike the practice and don't think that nicknames age well. That said, here are some of my favorite nicknames and their corresponding full names.Elisabeth "Ellie"
Beatrice "Bea"
Mary "Molly"
Margaret "Maggie" or "Meg"
Sarah "Sadie"
Ann or anything with Ann in it "Annie"Benjamin or Bennett "Ben"
Joseph "Joey"
Robert "Robin" or "Robbie"
Henry "Harry"ETA: Susannah "Sunny"

I'm sure people have already said that Audrey, Eli, Flora, Jules, Luc, and Levi aren't nicknames, but.I think these "can" stand alone:
Ada
Alex
Kit
Eliza
Ella
Gwen
Heidi
Jack
Maggie
Margot
Penny
Sally
SaschaI don't think I'll ever like things like Gracie and Annie as full names. Or Ellie. It just seems so silly. Also: these bizarre English things like Alfie that are so trendy. ???

Favorite nicknames:Ginny
Minnie
Eliza, but I'd never use it as a nickname. It's totally a full name to me.
Penny
Mindy
Beth, which I'd also use as a full name.
Kate/Katie/Kit- I'd use Kate as a full name.
Cora, which can stand alone, but I'd prefer to use it as a nickname for something like Coralie or Cordelia.
Evie
Junie
Sylvie, which can stand alone, but I prefer as a nickname for Sylvia.
Maggie
Mira, which I'd use both in full and as a nickname for Mirabelle.
Rosie
Romy, which I could see working as a full name.
Sadie, which I'd use in full.
Sophie- can stand alone, but like Sylvie, I prefer it as a nickname.
Tess- I prefer it as a a stand-alone name.Jem

I don't consider Ada, Audrey, Gwen, Eli, Ella, Flora, Jules, Luc, or Levi to be nicknames, although some of them can be used as nicknames, such as Eli for Elijah. Based upon Audrey, I'm curious if you'd consider my own name (Alison) to be a nickname since it is a medieval French diminutive of Aalis, just as Audrey started out as a medieval diminutive for some impossible-to-type Old English name. From the rest, I think Eliza, Margot, and Heidi have the legs to stand on their own and long histories of doing so. As does Jack, though I personally can't stand it. Annika and Sacha are fine with me. I prefer Sally as a nickname, but I think it can stand alone. I prefer Annie, Alex, Angie, Kit, Maggie, and Penny to be nicks for longer names. Some of my favorites that I think can stand alone are Greta, Alec, Tess, and Thea. I also like Ty, but I don't know that I'd use it.

I think you're confusing nicknames and variants. Margot is not a nickname, neither are Ada, Annika etcI think they all work on their own except for: Kit, Annie, Angie, Lulu, Maggie.

Annika is a "diminutive" and Ada is a "short form." Nicknames, right?
vote up1
Hmmm no, to me a short form isn't a nickname. A nickname is something like Abby for Abigail or Maddie for Madeline but nothing that isn't used as a nickname anymore and has a long history of a name on its own. It simply derived from that name.I used to live in a country in which Annika was one of the most common names around. No one there ever used it as a short form of Anne or Anna. It may have derived from those names but always stood on its own. I would never say that Annika was a nickname.

In that case it's a really fine line.

Annie is my first name! :) It's a little bit annoying when people are always calling me Anne/Anna, but otherwise I like it well enough.

I think some nicknames stand alone better than others, actually. Oddly enough any name that ends in 'ie' seems incomplete to me (probably due to names like Maggie, Katie, etc, that are popular here, but always short for something). However, I knew a woman that named her daughter Abby instead of Abigail, because she didn't see the point of naming her child a name she wouldn't be called most of the time. So really, it's just a matter of opinion.Names on your list that I think are excellent choices for standing alone are:Ada, Audrey, Eliza*, Flora, Heidi*, Margot*, Penny, Sacha, Sally, Eli, Jack*, Jules, Levi.*= I love them!I do really, really love Kit, Annie, & Maggie, though.

I think that all of the ones on your list can stand alone except for Lulu, which sounds too cutesy as a full name. Kit would probably be better as a nickname, but I don't necessarily mind it as a full name. The only people I've known named Flora and Audrey were simply Flora and Audrey. I've never heard Levi used as a nickname before - only as a full name. These are my favorites:
Addie
Ada
Eliza
Jack
Bev
Katie
Kay
Callie
Charlie
Elle
Ellie
Nora
May / Mae
Lenny
Theo
Thea

Archie and Alfie are great nicknames that I don't like the whole name too, which is sad. They have an old, charming feel to them. :)
