Catherine (Cathy)
I always had a soft spot for Catherine, but instead of Cate or Catie I've always favored Cathy. I find it refreshing, classic and cute. It has been used in literature a lot, too. What do you think? Is Cathy still too dated?
How many girls named Catherine(and variants) do you know? Do they go by Catherine, Katherine etc or a nickname? Which one?
What's your fave spelling and nickname?

Well I know 5 Catherine's
Myself and I go by Cathryn
and another girl in my year who spells in Katherine and goes by Kat
and there is another Catherine in my year but I don't know how she spells it or if she has a nn.
My ex history/drama teacher spelt it Kathryn
My mum works with a Cathy I'm not sure if it's short for Catherine but I don't know what else it can be short for
My favorite spelling is Cathryn just becuase it not that common and makes it seem less princess-y.
My favorite nickname is Cat, I don't really like Cathy

I know
Kathy - Katherine
Kathy - Mary Katherine
Kathy - Kathleen
Kathy - Katharynne
Cathy - Cathleen
Cathy - Cathryn
All these women work with me and there are two other's Catherine and Katherine that go by the long form of thier name...
I like C/Katherine and K/Cathleen but I would NEVER use C/Kathy... just too popular in the 50 something crowd.
My grammie was Kathleen and she went by Kay... I like that...

Cathy (Catherine) is my mom's name, she's over 60. I think it'll be at least another 20+ years before Cathy as a nn comes back around. I do prefer using a "C" over using a "K" because it has a much softer look. I've never liked the nickname Katie, it's overused for my generation (Gen X/Y), and it's too cutesy. Cate is nice. My daughter's name is Grace Catherine, which I chose because it was soft and classic.
I have known many over the years- either Catherine, Katherine, or Kathryn. I have never met a Katharine. Of those I've known, most went by Katie. One went by Kate. One did not use a nickname.
I have only known one Cathy- she was an exchange student from South Korea I taught during my student teaching. Cathy was the name she chose as her "American" name.
I like both Catherine and Katherine as spellings. I dislike the other spellings. I like Kate, Katie, and Kit as nicknames. I do find Cathy a bit too dated still, and I don't particularly like the sound of it.

Cathy on a 35 year old is commonplace. Cathy on a 21st-century baby is retro cool. There are so many Kates, Cates, and Katies right now, Cathy would be a distinctive choice.
I've known at least 15 Kathies, Kathys, and Cathys, most of whom are in the 30-60 year range now. I couldn't begin to guess how many of them were Katherines (of any spelling) or Kathleens. At the moment, I work with a Kathryn (no nn) and a Katherine who goes by Kathie.
I know a Katherine (Kath) and a Kathryn (no nn) in their twenties.
I know quite a few small children and teenagers with the name as well. The most common spelling is Katherine followed by Kathryn, and they're almost all Katie or Kate. I also know a ton of Katelyns (in every spelling under the sun) who seem to be Kates and Katys, too.
Under age 2, I know one Katharine (Katy), one Catherine (no nn), and one who's just Kate.
My favorite spelling is Catherine, but my favorite nicknames are spelled with K: Kit, Kate, Katy, and Kathy.

I like Catherine. It feels softer & more classic than Katherine. I do find Cathy very dated though.
I know a Cathy (not sure if her full name is just Cathy or not) who is in her 50's, a Cathy (I think short for Catherine but maybe Cathleen) who is in her 40's and a Catherine who goes by Catie who is about 30.
Most Katherine's (or any K variant) I know go by Kate or Katie (maybe about 10) but 2 go by Katherine, both are about 30, and one goes by Kathy-she is 25. And I have always thought Kathy sounded dated on her.

I would also find a little Cathy quite refreshing. We're so inundated with Katies that Cathy is the bolder and fresher choice nowadays.
I know a few Catherines. One goes by Catherine-in-full, the others by Cathie and CAthy. Catherine is a teen, the Cathys are both in their fifties.
I like Katherine myself, it's a bit sharper, but I prefer Cate over Kate. I like Kitty for Katherine. I also like Kathe or Kaethe.

People I know:
Catherine (no nn) age 10
Cathy (full name) age about 65
Katherine (Katie) age about 20
Kathryn (Katie) age 21
Kathryn (Kathy) age about 60
Kathleen (Kathy) age about 65
Kathleen (Kathy) age about 65
Kathleen (used to go by Katie) age about 25
Kathleen (Katy) age 23
Kate (full name) age 7
Kate (full name?) age 4
I like Catherine and Katherine pretty equally. My favorite nickname is Kate.

I like Cathy. It makes me think of a young, blonde English girl dressed in a light floral dress. Hm. Maybe preppy New England?
Gosh. I don't know if I could count the Katherine/Kathryns I know. I can tell you I know zero people who spell their name Catherine.
The only time I see or hear of Kathy being used is when their name is spelled Kathryn. The Katherines I know tend to go by Kate, Katie, Katy, Kat, Kitty or Kay.
My favorite spelling is Catherine and now that you mention it I think Cathy would be adorable on a little girl. Otherwise, the nickname Cate would be used.

I think Catherine is very pretty, but I dislike the nickname Cathy. It feels so dated and reminds of the comic strip: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cathy Personally, I like Cate a lot better.
I know a:
Kathryn - no nn, age: 40s
Katherine - Kathy, age: 60s
Katherine - Kate, age: 30
Catherine - Cat, age: 27
I know a:
Kathryn - no nn, age: 40s
Katherine - Kathy, age: 60s
Katherine - Kate, age: 30
Catherine - Cat, age: 27
I like Catherine a lot, but I could never get behind Cathy. I'm not too fond of the look or sound. I don't know if I'd consider it dated -- though all the Cathys I have known have been much older than I.
Let's see, I know...
Katherine (no nickname)
Katherine (Katie)
Katherine (Kate)
Katie (full name)
Kathryn (no nickname)
All are in their teens or twenties.
Catherine is the form of the name I like the best, with Kitty or Cat for a nickname (it's so snappy).

I am a Catherine and while I'd love to have the nickname of Cathy, I'm just a Kitty. :)
Oh, I forgot to answer the Catherine/Katherines and variants that I know:
I know/have known:
Katherine who goes by Katie
Katie (that's her formal name)
Kathy (that's her formal name, too)
Kathleen who goes by Katy
Caitlyn who goes by Katie

I used to dislike Cathy finding it doudy. However of recent it is starting to sound refreshing to me too. I've always loved Catherine / Katherine.
I'd love to meet a little Cathy running around. Its practically unused today. It's adorable, but has the classic Catherine / Cate to fall back on in later life if she wants to
I quite like the spelling Cathie to be honest

I adore Catherine (like Katherine too), but Cathy still feels too dated for me. Some dated names I still like, but that one is too ho-hum or something. Maybe too many middle-aged C/Kathies that I know. I prefer Cate or Kitty. Or there's Cat, which I used to love, but seems too... catty to me now. Ha.
Oh geez, I know a million Catherines and variants. I could never count them all. If I just look at my FB friend ones, there's:
Catherine
Catherine "Cat"
Kathryn
Katherine "Kathy"
Katherine "Katie"
...seems like I have more then that. Maybe I'm trying to include the just Kate/Katies, Kathleens, and Caitlin and variants too.
