I think you either need to use it as a nickname (for Maximilian or something) or use a good long middle name of about 4 syllables. If you used a very short middle name it would sound too choppy (e.g. Max John, Max George)

Max is so hard to work with for me! I don't really like any of the long forms of Max but it is short to work with as a first name.
It needs a longer name like Alexander, Jonathan or Sebastian. I know a Max Kenneth & I think that works pretty well.

I think Max is a great name. Personally, I'm partial to Maximillian nn Max, just cause I'm pretentious like that. Max on it's own is perfectly fine, though. Limiting Max to the fn position, here are some possibilities:
