It could still be a pet. We say our dog is our daughter's brother. Not that I would put that in a birth announcement though :)

When my sister was born, my dad put in the BA: Sister for Emily, Joshua and Maddy - Maddy was our dog. ;)

Yeah, I was just chatting to my room-mate about it, and she said she calls her family's dog her 'sister'.

The location for the family is actually my home town in Maryland, and I don't know the family myself, but I've e-mailed some friends who are still in the area to see if anyone knows them and can clarify.

I'm intrigued to know the truth now.

My hunch is it's a nickname.
