No. Firstly, it's far too obvious--unless you're going to Kate Kline or Jasper Fforde it and make everyone's names puns, it'll stick out badly. Moreover, that pronunciation isn't at all intuitive; how do you get three syllables from Sylum? I see two: SYE-luhm.

for your character to be real, he needs a background, if only in your mind. So, even though he grew up weird/ugly, would his parents have given him such a name?

It's too obvious for a character name (Sylum--> Asylum) I like for names in stories to have a hidden meaning, perhaps a hidden irony of their name. Unless you're going for an over-the-top story for the average Joe, be more creative.

I think if you are going for wierd/funny and ugly looking it will fit perfectly! It kind of reminds me of Asylum... which is definately crazy!

Totally a good character name. It works well
