Re: Declan

Oh please don't use Declan on a girl. It's such a ruggedly masculine name, and so handsome.

Declan is definitely a boys name for me. I can see someone changing it to Declanne or something to make it 'feminine'. urk.
....
Oh, I didn't mean to suggest that I want to use it on a girl. It just seems to have many of the components that would also make it a girl name. Personally, I would not use the name for either gender.

It *does* have a few components that would make it feminine to modern ears (the -lan sound at the end being so similar to -lynn in particular). I don't see it as "ruggedly" masculine myself, just masculine. Like a shy, bespectacled boy who wins people over in a geeky sort of way.
I guess because I imagine it said with a brouge. The "lan" part sounds more like "lun' than like "lin".
If I was thinking of it in the waythat "most people" would say it, I can really see the difference. And I especially see the "lyn" thing.
I have the same feeling about Laughlin as I do for this name and they are using that on girls now :-(
