I have a soft spot for John William, but I like John paired with an unexpected or very uncommon middle name (not that John is all that common anymore). Of more usual middle names, I think John Oliver, John Eliot, and John Walter are very handsome.
More unusual pairings:
John Thaddeus
John Indigo
John Zephyrus
John Orlando
John Marius
John McKenna
John Lucius
John Lucian
John Sterling
John Aurelio
I've seen John Cormac on a few people's lists and I think that's a great combo.

John Henry.
My ex-boyfriends name, I always loved it :) .
I don't know, but anything that's uncommon would go well.
John August
I think it's very handsome and regal. :)

Ooh, I like that one!
Opps. I meant to reply to the original message.
John Alistair
I will never give up the fight to keep Aubrey as a male name.
Others you might like:
John Patrick (an oldie but a goodie)
John Matthias
John August
John Cormac
John Oliver
John Finlay ("-lee")
John Alexander
John Somerled (neat meaning)
John Pellinore (for the Arthurian Tales fan in you)
John Makepeace
John Emeric / Emmerich
John
How wonderful to see someone considering John as a formal name. Jack is a nice nn, but it always feels like a nn and I miss being introduced to Johns. There are getting rarer and rarer. :-)

You have heard of THE John Aubrey, of course? The one who wrote the Brief Lives? Do yourself a major favour, if not!
And, about 20 years ago I taught a boy whose school nn was Aubrey. Don't ask me why. He was skinny with huge dark-grey eyes and looked nocturnal. Can't recall his actual fn; could have been Anthony.
I've never seen Aubrey on a South African girl. Might you emigrate?

No. I haven't heard of John Aubrey or "Brief Lives." I'm off to look it up and check it out. Thanks!
ETA: Too cool. Historical biography is my favorite genre. And I'm really into baroque England and the Stuart court right now. This should be right up my alley. I can't think why I've never heard of him. Or perhaps I did and subliminally remembered it? I'll try to get a hold of a copy and put it on my long list of "to be read." Thanks so much. :-)

Yes. Thank you. I do know I'm swimming against the stream. It's the same perversity that makes me cling to loose tea instead of tea bags. (I hate the taste of the paper in my tea.) I'll never give up either fight!

Isn't he a wonder? The first time I saw it on these boards I didn't get it. You're a quicker study than me.
My current stock combo for him is Eric Somerled. I picture a new age, hippy Viking peacefully invading an island in the summertime. Oh, happy invasions! Go, Eric Somerled, go! And if I'm feeling really dangerous, Rune Somerled. But that may be going overboard.

Eric Somerled is epic. I just have to get in on the Somerled love, because I've had some for him for a long time, too. :)
Bear, you will probably love Aubrey Somerled. It's a combo I've had for a long time that used to be one of my very favorites! It makes me think of a medieval guy planting in a field, but he secretly has some mad archery skills. I also like Beathan Somerled.
