Where did you get that from? All I've heard "lads" used for is as a synonym for "boys".

In England too, "lads" could mean something more than just boys. Like if a group of guys are going out they would say they are going out with the lads, but I think there is an unsaid sense of something too... hard to describe when you are outside the culture. Inside it everyone knows what it means.
