No, Freddie isn't a substantial enough name. Though it's cute on a little boy, all little boys grow up and it would be silly on a grown man. Definitely use Frederick.

I love Frederick and Freddie is a great nickname for it. He might use Freddie for his whole life in most contexts, and that's fine, but if you give him the full name he has a more formal option if he becomes a judge/lawyer/politician or whatever.

Go with Fredrick. It sounds more professional.

Freddie is nice. In my husband's family Alfred is a family name - you could use that. There was at least one Alfred who went by the nn Fred. Or how about Wilfred? I wouldn't use Freddie on it's own.

Well the good thing about Freddie is that it can be short for a few things. You're not just stuck with Frederick. There's also Alfred, Manfred and Wilfred. What about calling him Fred nn Freddie? I think just-Fred is totally doable too. I came across a lot of just-Freds when I worked in the Mason's archives. It's got a very affable 1930's feel to it.

I'd go with the full name. It's good to have a formal full name to fall back on, especially when you're in a professional setting.

I don't like using nicknames as full names. I would use "Frederick" (with two e's) and call him Freddie.

Put Fredrick on the birth certificate and call him Freddie. That way, he has options when he grows up.

Definitely use Frederick. Little boys grow up quickly. I find most -y and -ie nns very childish.

Definitely go for the full name. Even if you never call him that, as we do with my 11-year-old cousin Frederick who has always gone by Freddie or Fred from Day 0, he'll appreciate having the option of the more serious name to fall back on when he's an adult. He may prefer Freddie, and always choose to be called by that, but at least he'll have that choice.

I had a teacher in elementary school named Freddie (full name). I can see Freddie working on its own. People will most definitely tell you it's childish etc etc but I just don't see the point in giving a child a name that in real life never will be his name. In general I think Fredrick is a nice name but if you never going to call him Fredrick don't use it.

I think Freddie is way too childish of a name to not give him the option of something else at some point. It doesn't have to be Fredrick, although that is a fine name. What about

IMO you should only use Fredrick or Frederick or any other variation of the name if you genuinly love it. Personally I would just go with Freddie :)

We are planning on one day using Leopold but our child will mostly be known as Leo. I think it's just nice to have a longer, fuller name for professional life.

Alfred, Frederick, Wilfred, Friedrich... any of these could work!

I would give him a full name (doesn't have to be Frederick), but at the very least name him Fred and call him Freddie. Freddie is much too childish to be a person's full name, imo.

you could use Alfred, Wilfred, or Manfred if you like but Frederick or Fredrick would be much better and he can have a more mature name or professional name when he's older. Or you could just go with Fred nn Freddie.
