Andromeda
If two potential parents who love astronomy stated they may want to name their baby girl Andromeda - what would you say? (I thought I ask you first before family & friends :))We love the name Anne / Annie but we have heard comments that the name is too bland and boring. So what if we had an Andromeda and called her Ann or Annie for short. I'm Greek so the name would have added meaning to me with it also being the name of a Greek mythological princess. It would also kind of fit nice with my own name which is Anastasia. Your thoughts...

I would tell them I think it's an awesome idea and they should definitely do it! :)Andromeda is one of my favorite GPs. If I were an astronomer, I feel like I'd use it for sure. Annie makes a great nickname, and you being Greek only adds to the awesome factor.

After the first question, I thought "Andromeda Strain". I think it was a movie that was out when I was a small kid but the sounds of it stuck with me and it's always what I think of when I hear the name. I know, weird, right? Then I read your 2nd question and thought... hmmmm.... I suppose that Anne is plain but it's definitely nice and there aren't many Anne's being born these days so it will probably be refreshing to hear of an Anne. However, I wuld probably use Anne as a nn for something because I just prefer names that you can give nns for.By the time I read your 3rd paragraph, I decided that Andromeda is definitely a better fit for you than Anne is. Firstly, Anastasia, mother of Andromeda is just beyond romantic and wonderful sounding! Secondly, Andromeda has a cultural meaning for you, which makes it very appropriate and amplifies how lovey the name is.In conclusion, Andromeda would be stunning! I think you should go with it!

Andromeda is brilliant! I love the astronomical/mythological connection, and how it manages to be both a very strong and elegantly feminine name. I slightly prefer Andie to Annie, but either way, Andromeda makes a delightfully unexpected full name for a more common MN.

I think it's pretty awesome :)I've always wanted a rat and imagined naming her either Ernestine or Andromeda.Andromeda would be just as awesome on a human too though. There are a lot of great nickname options: Ann, Annie, Andie, Romy, Etta...

I think Andromeda is a beautiful name, and Ann/Annie always gives the child an "out" if they don't agree. It seems fine to me.

I love Andromeda and the idea of the nn Annie. BTW, this has probably been mentioned already, but this was the name of a character in Jodi Picoult's novel, "My Sister's Keeper."I'm curious if you have a nn that differs from Andromeda / Annie.

I think it's beautiful and would be thrilled to hear that potential parents wanted to name their daughter Andromeda. It's long, yes, but not any longer than Alexandra, which is commonly used. She could always go by Annie or Andi. Annie is a great nickname for it.

I'd be thrilled, I love Andromeda (and Anastasia). If it were me I'd use the nickname Romy.

I love Andromeda. But I also think Anne or Anna are sweet names all on their own. Very classic and would age very well. I wouldn't use a long name just because others don't like the short version, unless you love the long name as much as the short version. However, if you love Andromeda, I think it's completely usable even by astronomy geeks and gives the child other nns other than Anne too. I'm a plant geek and I named my child Linnea, but most people not into plants don't make the connection, they just think Linnea is pretty. Andromeda is a plant too. BTW.

I love Andromeda :) Ann or Annie would be adorable nn's. I think it's also totally useable; connections to astrology and mythology be damned. Just because something has a connection to something else doesn't mean it shouldn't be used. I've also thought of using Andromeda before, and ended up of thinking of how many different nicknames could derive from it. There's Ann/Annie/Ana/Anna, and Andy. I also think Etta (or maybe an alternative spelling like possibly Edda) could be used

I love it. I say go for it. Annie is already one of my favorite nicknames and Andromeda is a nice name, not too strange to me at all.

I think that Annie might make a good nickname, but I don't think Andromeda is really that usable. It's too connected with Greek mythology and astronomy.

It's not exactly my style, but I do love Annie and can appreciate a funkier full name. But, there is a pretty cheesy Canadian television show by this name and unfortunately that's a pretty strong association for me. I doubt anyone outside of Canada would recognize it though, so I'm sure that needn't be a consideration for you.
