Nico pronounced neek-o immediately makes me think of Velvet Underground Nico, so I picture someone female with cheekbones and a moody look. I have known a male Nico pronounced nick-o, and short for Dominic, so there's another name for your list.
Niko seems entirely male, though. I quite like it as a full name.

I don't really like it..
My friend's boyfriend is named Nicolas, nn Nico. It took me almost two years to realize that his name was Nicolas, and not just Nico.
My favorite Nico- names are Nicodemus, Niko (with the Niko spelling) and Nicholas. And I think Nico works on a girl too. My name is Nicole, and my floorbacl coach calls me Nico.

I knew a Nico, and he was *not* a good person so the name has terrible associations for me. That aside, I don't really like it as a full name. I think it works better as a nickname for any of the names besides Nicholas (but that's because I don't pronounce Nicholas with a long "i" and I'd like the nn to sound like the fn). I like the Nico spelling better, unless the fn started Nik-
Well, I am definitely biased on this one as I have a one-year-old son named Niko. I love the name. We picked it a year-and-a-half before he was born and never once second-guessed ourselves. And I think I still like it more every time I hear it. For me, it feels like a fun and spunky name. I think it looks more substantial with a k.
I also wouldn't mind it as a nickname for Nicolas, Nikolai, or Domenico.

lol I love that you think of an Italian mobster! because I kept thinking the total opposite =]
Haha. I think it's because I once read a story where a character named Nico was in the mafia. So now I can't get that association out of my head. lol.
