I know what you mean. I'm not sure that your Maia would end up as Maia Lastname but she very well could be Maia with an I (as opposed to Mya with a Y or Maya with 2 As). Popularity is very local. If a lot of your friends are using Mya on their little girls (who might go to school with yours) means you might want to stay away.

That's the thing. The Myas we know are in different states, except for one, who's in a different city. I'm not sure how to find out if it's popular in our area. Suggestions?
Take a look at birth announcements in your local papers. You might be able to see archives from the past year or so on their websites. Also, check facebook for people in your city who have posted the names their kids/grandkids/nieces/ect.
