In spite of it's growing popularity, my husband and I have only agreed on one girl name for the last 5 years--Maia--and we'll finally be having a daughter in May. My favorite combo for the moment is Maia Lucia. I think it fits well with her older brother, Evander Clay, since I have a thing for mythological names.
However, 2 friends and a cousin I don't see often all named their daughters Mya in the last year. I'd loved the name Maia for ages, but had crossed it off my list due to increasing use...What do you think of Maia Lucia, and would you still use it?

I admit it bugs me that this gorgeous, classic name is being spelled Myah and Miya and Myeyah (you get the idea). Still, I love it as you seem to so I'd use it anyway.

Are you pronouncing it like Mya or like May-a? If you are pronouncing it the same I would avoid it but I really hate common names. Still, she's your child. If you and your dh want to use it regardless of its popularity then you should.
ETA: If you are pronouncing it the same as Mya and Maya you have to be prepared that when you call "Maia" all the Myas and Mayas will answer too. You aren't likely to have many other Evanders answering when you call your son. If you like that and want that for your daughter too I'm afraid Maia should go on the back burner.

I pronounce it MIE-e. And that's really what I'm afraid of. I don't think it would be common, per se, but not as rare as I would hope. The situation I'm trying to avoid is this: My husband's poor sister Amanda had to use both first and last names because there was another Amanda with the same first, middle, AND last initial. 5 Amandas in their preschool class. Now THAT is an overly popular name.

I know what you mean. I'm not sure that your Maia would end up as Maia Lastname but she very well could be Maia with an I (as opposed to Mya with a Y or Maya with 2 As). Popularity is very local. If a lot of your friends are using Mya on their little girls (who might go to school with yours) means you might want to stay away.
Sorry if I'm not much help. I guess and your husband need to decide if you can handle being Maia with an I's parents or if you want to keep looking.

That's the thing. The Myas we know are in different states, except for one, who's in a different city. I'm not sure how to find out if it's popular in our area. Suggestions?

Take a look at birth announcements in your local papers. You might be able to see archives from the past year or so on their websites. Also, check facebook for people in your city who have posted the names their kids/grandkids/nieces/ect.

Yes, it is Maya that is popular, but they still sound the same. I worried that I was getting into the Kylee/Kyleigh/Kielie/etc deal, because it would still sound like the same name even though the origin and meaning are very different. Thanks!

Use it! Maia is effortlessly beautiful; it complements your son's name perfectly; and it's the only name you and your husband agree on!
