I can definitely see Irene coming back into style, along with Iris and Helen, for the exact reasons you pointed out. It would hold a lot of appeal for the discerning parent who wants something "refreshing but not weird".
I'm not a massive fan of Irene but only because it holds no mystery for me - Irene was the name of the mother of one of my closest friends when I was young. She was Scottish and enormously tall and scary.
Irene Melisande is lovely and very fanciful. I se Irene as a kind of champion for the downtrodden, very proud and bold, so I'd pair her with something similarily rough-and-tumble elegant. Irene Maud is really speaking to me.
