Tristan HuwI'm so glad to see that the children have more older names than their parents (too bad that hasn't happened in the rest of the world). Why is it that the Welsh are going back to their ancient names? Is it because of the recent resurgence in the number of people who speak Welsh?

I think the increase in Welsh speakers has stoked up the national pride, definitely, and people having children are looking for interesting Welsh names or choosing Welsh versions of English names more often. A friend who teaches at a primary school says that the class registers are a bit like reading the Mabinogion! I've noticed quite a lot of people changing their children's surnames back to the original Welsh versions, too (ap Rhys instead of Price, Tomos instead of Thomas, etc.)

Aww, Esyllt Mair is so pretty! Tristan Huw is nice, too.Meia is pretty and Ynyr is interesting. Do you know anything about them?

Meia is a modern Welsh version of Maya. Ynyr (unn-eer) was a 5th-century prince - it's apparently an archaic word for honor, and it's not that common but I have come across a few.
