Gerda?
What do you think of Gerda? It is one of those names that I like but would probably never use. I first heard it as a child reading The Snow Queen, the children were Gerda (girl) and Kai (boy).:)

Chalk it up to my being a nurse, but when I hear Gerda (if pronounced with a hard "G", like I'm assuming), then all I see is GERD = gastroesophageal reflux disease. lol

Gerda is a unusual, but I like it. I've only heard of two people w/ it: Charlize Theron's mother and an author (sorry, no details on her). This is a name that I might use for an animal, but never for a human. I also like Gerd._________________________________________________

I *love* it (only like Ylva says, pronounced YAIRR-da) because it reminds me of the Snow Queen which was my favourite story when I was little.
It's only when people pronounce it gur-dah that I think it's ugly.Alice

I have a friend named Gerda, she's German, and pronounces it sort of-"Gair-da". Since she's the only one I've ever met, and I like her, s I like the name well enough.

Gerda is pronounced as YAIRR-daSince the G is before a soft vowel, it is pronounced with a J-sound. And J is pronound as Y in Scandinavian languages. To me, Gerda is an "old lady" name. But it may get popular in Sweden again, like other old names as Elsa and Greta. But outside Scandinavia, I fear the pronounciation would be butchered."You sought a flower and found a fruit. You sought a spring and found a sea. You sought a woman and found a soul. You are disappointed."

I think it's adorable. It has a lot of "old world charm."

Mum to Hayley Anne. :)I remeber it from The Snow Queen too, I prefer Gerta or Gertie though. I like Kai but prefer Kye or Khye.

I rather like it, because of a book I had as a kid called "Gerda lives in Norway", about a girl named Gerda and her friend Helga. I'm never quite sure how to pronounce it though. JER-da doesn't sound right, and GER-da reminds me of girders, a type of iron support used in buildings. But still, I like it!
