Hungarian names (ETA a couple more)
I've just returned from a trip to Hungary, and I've come across quite a few interesting names. I've noticed Hungarian names rarely get discussed here. I'm not 100% sure how all of these are pronounced, also I've noticed quite a few words have lots of accents and I'm not sure how they're used.
Boys:
Imre
Ferenc
Mathias
Miklos
Erno
Lajos
Laszlo
Istvan
Gabor
Sandor
Girls:
Erzsebet
Agnes
Sofia
Klara
Valeria
Judit
Monika
Katalin
Margaret
Zsuzsanna
I've been fixating on Imre, I wouldn't use it but it's interesting

I love Hungarian names.
I love Eastern European names in general. But Hungarian names have that special, spicy quality to them that I find irresistable.
Imre -- Love it. I have a thing for "i" names.
Ferenc -- I love Francis, but this one always makes me stop to pronounce it correctly. I find it slightly annoying, but that's my limitation. I'd be extremely pleased to meet a little Ferenc one day.
Mathias -- Always handsome and dashing, in almost any variant. This one is no exception.
Miklos -- Very handsome.
Erno -- This one loses me.
Lajos -- Nice.
Lazslo -- Love it. It makes me think of Victor Lazslo and "Casablanca." :-)
Istvan -- Love Stephen. Love Istvan. Another "i" name for me. Yay, team "i."
Gabor -- Too ZsaZsa for me.
Sandor -- Love it. Very handsome.
The male names feel so muscular to me.
Erzsebet -- Delightful.
Agnes -- I would have thought the Hungarian form was different than this, not that I have anything particular in my head. I've always loved Agnes.
Sofia -- Nice, if somewhat tired right now.
Klara -- Sorry, Hungary. I prefer the Clara spelling. Lovely name.
Valeria -- Now there's a name with flair. Love it.
Judit -- Kick in the pants. Love it.
Monika -- Prefer the Monica spelling. But either way this name doesn't get enough attention.
Katalin -- Nice.
Margaret -- Really? They don't have a goulashier spelling? Ah well. Margaret is enduring and lovely no matter what variant.
Zsuzsanna -- Zing!

ROLF at "goulashier spelling"! I have to use that one. "Paprikashier" is also a possibility.
They do have Margaréta, but it's not very adventurous.

oh, how could I forget Bela!
Bela, of course... *facepalm*
I went to Pecs and Budapest, plus to Villany and Syklos on a day trip. I put some pics up in the Lounge, if you're interested.

I like all of them - Hungarian names are great. Surprised to see they use Margaret.
Yes, Margareta is the more common form.

Maybe it's influenced by Margaret Island?
My dad's family is Hungarian so I have a soft spot for Hungarian names. :) My favorite boys combo for a long time was Imre Sandor.
I like:
Imre
Miklos
Istvan
Sandor
(other male Hungarian names I like: Arpad & Almos, especially Almos. I love its meaning)
Erzsebet
Klara
Katalin
Margaret (almost every woman on my dad's side of the family is named Margaret haha)
(also Anasztazia, Milena, Csilla, and Ilona which is definitely a fave)

I know quite a few Hungarians and even studies Hungarian for a while, so I'm a big fan of their names:-)

Erzsebet -also love Erzsi and Erzsika
Sofia
Klara
Valeria
My fave Hungarian names are Orsolya, Ibolya, Jolan, Zsuzsanna, Nandor, Attila, Arpad.
Some easy pronunciation tips: s=sh, sz=s, zs=zh, i=ee, ly=y
Oh, and the accents change the way the letter is pronounced (but hard to explain in writing), they don't denounce the stress.

My sister is named Orsolya and my older brother is Attila.
And yes, kudos to you for studying Hungarian. :)

What's your name (if you don't mind sharing)? Your parents have fabulous taste:-)
Edina.
And thanks.
And thanks.
It is hard (which is why I only took it for a year), but very interesting:-) I might give it another try once I graduate.
Everyone has a bad image of Attila the Hun, but I guess if you're a descendant of Huns the name would have great meaning (as it does in Hungary and it's quite popular). It's the same with some Slavic names that have a 'bad rep' outside Slavic countries (like Igor, Ivan or Vladimir).

Hmm, I wouldn't say Igor, Ivan and Vladimir have the same reputation than Attila, because there some positive or neutral associations as well (eg Igor Stravinski). Attila's only Attila the Hun, and pretty much the villain of the fairy tale in Western history textbooks. I'm aware it does not have the same association everywhere, but I still find it funny when I encounter it (one of my relatives has a Hungarian SO named Attila).
I quite like Hungarian names! Your trip must have been exciting! Anyways I love Erzsebet but I will always think of Erzsebet Bathory. Judit is really nice as is Agnes and Klara. Out of the boys I like Imre, Erno, Miklos, Gabor, Sandor, Ferenc and I LOVE Laszlo! Adore it!
