Re: Lillian or Lilia?
in reply to a message by Chanel
As a sister to Rosemary I'd prefer Lillian, but I personally like Lilia better. I actually really love the name tbh. I always pronounce it as Lily-ah too and that's the way I've heard it as well. I mean, how else are you supposed to say it? Also, I was watching the movie "The Ten Commandments", as I do from time to time and there is a Lilia in the movie, said the way we pronounce it. Every time I watch the movie, it gives me a fresh love for the name.

LEE-lee-ah would be the German pronunciation and could also be the Russian / Ukrainian one, not sure though. This makes more sense to us, as the name is derived from the word for lily (we say Lilie) which is also pronounced with an 'ee' sound instead of 'i': LEE-lee-ə. Plus, almost all European languages (English is an exception here) pronounce an a (even at the end of a word) as 'ah', never 'uh' or 'ə'.

See in my accent, ah and uh are almost identical. I have to reeeeally strain to hear any difference.
And that makes sense that you would pronounce it with how you say Lily with an ah at the end. That's what I do too, I just pronounce Lily differently than you.

Oh, I didn't know that 'uh' and 'ah' is almost the same in your accent. My mouth is wide open when I say 'ah', if that helps ;)
Thanks! That's my thing too, I love Lily and don't care about the cheesiness of Rosy and Lily. Just I like Lilia better, but Lillian fits better with Rosemary. Well no baby in the works for a long time, so I have plenty of time to decide!
I heard that the correct pronunciation was lee-lee-uh or something like that...not sure about that, but I love lily-uh!
