Lane or Laine?
Lane or Laine?
Which spelling do you prefer for a girl?
I prefer traditional spellings. The spelling Laine has been suggested to me but I am unsure if it is an accepted "traditional" spelling.
Thanks!

My niece is Laine, named after an Elaine whose school nn it was. Since Elaine goes back many centuries, I suppose that makes Laine a traditional spelling! Lane is very topographical: which might appeal to you for all I know. I'd expect a little Lane to have a brother called Track and a sister called Avenue.
I'm all about spelling names properly, trust me, but I think both spellings of Lane/Laine are perfectly acceptable.
I would personally go with Laine because it's less plain pedestrian and more girly.

Lane looks more masculine to me, and Laine more feminine.

I tend to agree with you.
I can handle almost any name on any gender as long as it is spelled correctly.

I prefer Laine, just because it's less like a word than Lane, and it seems more like a natural shortening of Elaine, which is how I assume this name got started.
The only real life Layne that I have known spelled it that way, though. I'm not sure what would be considered a traditional spelling. I like Layne more than Lane or Laine.

I have seen Layne used as well, as a mn for a male.
