Laine for a girl.
Lane for a boy.

My niece is Laine, named after an Elaine whose school nn it was. Since Elaine goes back many centuries, I suppose that makes Laine a traditional spelling! Lane is very topographical: which might appeal to you for all I know. I'd expect a little Lane to have a brother called Track and a sister called Avenue.

I'm all about spelling names properly, trust me, but I think both spellings of Lane/Laine are perfectly acceptable.

I prefer Laine, just because it's less like a word than Lane, and it seems more like a natural shortening of Elaine, which is how I assume this name got started.

The only real life Layne that I have known spelled it that way, though. I'm not sure what would be considered a traditional spelling. I like Layne more than Lane or Laine.
