I'm in the U.S. and I pronounce Basil as "BAZ-ull." Then again, I grew up watching BBC / PBS and Basil Fawlty ("Fawtly Towers") and Basil Rathbone ("Sherlock Holmes"). I pronounce the herb basil as "BAY-zull" but can't stand that way for the male proper name.

Baz as a nn would be terrific. Of course I could picture a little Baz. Could his brother please be Desmond, nn Dez? :-)
