Basil
How do you rate the name Basil (pronounced BAZZ-ull)? How about the nickname, which I personally find irresistibly adorable, Baz?
You could picture a little Baz?

I give Basil a ten. I love the name!
I also like the nickname Baz and can easily picture both Basil and Baz on a little boy.

The BAZZ-ul pronunciation is much better than BAZE-ul, that's for sure. And Baz is might cute. Basil, to me, has the same feel as Dashiell -- quirky cool and unconventional.
I'd picture him as someone who is very inquisitive, very intelligent without having to try too hard and basically very incorrigible! I'd give Basil a 7.

My grandmother's brother was named Basil (he was born around 1900) but he pronounced his name Bay-sil.
I know Basil nn Baz is one of those hipster trendy names, but Baz just sounds too much like spaz to me.

I pronounce is Bay-sul. I dont care for the nn Baz, rhymes with spaz, so I actually picture a hyper child.
I would give it a 9 or maybe even a 10. I love it and I can totally picture a little Baz.
I'd like to meet a little boy named Basil. Baz reminds me of the word "spaz", but it's kind of cute.
9, just lately. Baz is good and I want to meet a little one.
I could see a little kid named Baz, but Basil sounds like a middle-aged English man's name.
I'm in the U.S. and I pronounce Basil as "BAZ-ull." Then again, I grew up watching BBC / PBS and Basil Fawlty ("Fawtly Towers") and Basil Rathbone ("Sherlock Holmes"). I pronounce the herb basil as "BAY-zull" but can't stand that way for the male proper name.
Baz as a nn would be terrific. Of course I could picture a little Baz. Could his brother please be Desmond, nn Dez? :-)

Ooh, I like Basil! I'd give it a 9 out of 10. It's so dignified, but with a little humor to it. I think Baz is quite adorable, too. I could definitely picture a little boy who goes by Baz.

The other day I made myself a little list of names I really like but always forget about, and Basil was right at the top of the list. Man, I love Basil. It is just so freaking debonair. And so rare. The only Basil I ever knew was a border collie that belonged to my best friend.
I actually like Basil because you don't really need to shorten it - it's like the names Casper and Jasper and Simon, neat little packages of names, so tidy and complete.
Even though I would probably name a child Basil in the hope that he would be gentle and poetic and scholarly and dashing, sadly I can also totally see a little terror named Basil who never stops running amok and causing mayhem. That would be just my luck, to have a little Basil like that. I think my previous association with the border collie Basil may have given me that impression (he also never stopped runnig amok).
I like pairing Basil with simlarily neat, concise British middle names, like:
Basil James
Basil John
Basil George
Basil Jack
Basil Felix (although these names are both so tastefully unique I don't really like them both together... but brothers named Basil and Felix, now we are talking)
Basil Fredrick
Basil Kent
Basil William
