In English it's pronounced IS-am-bard. Isambard KB - yup, totally awesome combo there - got it from his French daddy, but apparently it comes originally from an Old German name, Isanberht, meaning something like bright iron. Kind of appropriate for an engineer. Kingdom was his mother's maiden name, I think.
I actually really like the sound of Brunel as a first name. Don't think I could use it though.
