I love it. It's a common name in my mother's side of our family, and I always quite envied it. It's feminine without being too girly, and it has an intelligent sound to me.

I dislike it because I know a really horrible girl named Harriet 'Haz.'I love the similar Henrietta, though.

Looooove Harriet. Very nice name and I think it it has several cute nickname options: Hattie, Hetty, Hatsy... I posted with a lady a while back who had a little daughter named Harriet Jane. Sublime!Welcome to the boards!

I think it sounds mean. I imagen a gray haired old woman. When my mother feels like crap and is angry she calls herself "mean Harriet". But I would prefer Harriet over Madisyn any day of the week.

ithink it's trendy and dislike it, it's not hideous, but harri sounds horrible on a girl and hattie is odd, it ranks alongside edith, mildred and hilary.it's also the name of an extremely irksome MP in the uk

Trendy? Its pretty much unheard of where I'm from.

If I had to guess......they probably meant trendy in the hipster set, which it is. In the mainstream? Not so much. But hipsters have zeroed in on Harriet lately.

Harriet is darling, especially with the nn Hattie. Shame the only ones I've ever known have been nicknamed Harry.Welcome in from the lurking shadows. =]

I've never liked Harriet - it was the name of a character in a storybook we had to read at primary school (about skaters, from memory) and I shuddered, thinking "What an ugly name, poor girl". I've never learned to like it since. It really grates on me.
Sorry!

I've always liked it very much indeed; where I live it doesn't sound even slightly hairy, which is no doubt a plus. And it's much more brisk and businesslike than the over-elaborate Henrietta ...I've had Harriet Daisy in my mind lately!

Welcome to the boards! I hope you find what you're looking for here :)Harriet is one of those names that I like in theory, and really want to like in reality, but I just can't. The sound just does not appeal to me at all. That being said, it has several absolutely fantastic namesakes. If you live in the US, Harriet will probably bring up connotations of "hairy" to a lot of people.Overall I'd give Harriet a positive review. But I think most people in the general public would consider it an ugly name.Cool screen name, by the way :)

I just can't love the name Harriet. I picture a big, hairy woman who smells bad.Hattie is cute, though.

Hope we don't scare you too much! ;PNice to see a lurker come out of the shadows, mwahahaha! I used to haaaaaate Harriet, I thought it so ugly. But then I turned 13, and my tastes began to mature ;) I rather like it now, as well as what I consider its "cousin" name - Henrietta. I like quite serious names, and Harriet fits the bill! Plus, the nicknames Hetty or Hattie are cute, cute, cute!!Welcome to the forum! :D

Ya'll haven't scared me...much. I'm glad some people like and I still LOVE it so what doesn't kill you...

Yes, yes, yes!Welcome to BtN, and thanks for posting! :D Personally, I think Harriet is absolutely lovely. I used to be completely enamored with the combination Harriet Abigail, until my cousin went and named her daughter Avigail. It packs a lot of antique charm, and the nickname Hattie is so cute I can't stand it. If you want some other combo suggestions, let me know and I'll test my creativity!
