Jay
WDYT? Too short? Too bird? Too "Great Gatsby"? Actually "The Great Gatsby"'s the reason I'm drawn to this name (though I don't think I'd use it).

It's my dad's name but personally I think it should be a nickname not a full name

To me it's very nickname-y. I've known a John and a James who went by Jay. It just doesn't seem substantial enough to be a full given name. And while I've a big Fitzgerald fan, the Gatsby connection really doesn't help it for me.

I like it fine, but I feel that it should only be a nickname. It seems too insubstantial on its own. As a nickname for James, it would be fine. This is my half-brother's name, but his full name is Joseph. He was named after my father. It wasn't really necessary to give him an unrelated nickname, since my father himself went by a nickname unrelated to Joseph, but somehow they decided to call him Jay. I guess because it sounds like J, the first letter of Joseph.

It's an interesting name.
Short? That, I think, would depend on the last name. My own (married name) is a 4-syllable one, riddled with "a"s, would be o.k. there. Too bird? I hadn't thought of that, but it's worth considering. However, I see a "Jay"-type guy letting any teasing roll off his back (feathers?) so it's no fun to tease him.

I like it a lot. I don't find it too short or too bird or anything! Just a nice simple name imo.

I have a friend named Jonathan who goes by Jay. I think its a cool name.=]

It's not bad. Unfortunately I don't associate it with the bird or the book, though I wish I could. Instead I see it as an attempt to disguise the over-used Jason and make it even more sporty and cool-surfer-dude. :(
