The No 1 Ladies' Detective Agency might have inspired Precious as it's the main character's name

I don't honestly think so. The name Precious has been used in the US for a very long time, especially on babies that were not expected to live or that were born sick. It was also a well used name in the African-American community before it became famous on The No. 1 Ladies Detective Agency.
