Ellie is all girl to me. I can't see it on a boy.

It would make more sense as a nickname for Elliott if you wanted to use Ellie for a boy. Elle might be better as a nickname for Gabriel. It doesn't seem to strange for me to have a boy named Elle because my great-uncle's MN is L (yeah, my great-grandma couldn't think of a MN). Anyways when you say Gregg L out loud it sounds like Gregg Elle, so it's almost masculine to me.
It's a bit of a stretch for me, in my accent the -el sound more like ul than el. Ellie is pretty feminine for a boy. If you like it, then use it, but keep in mind that he might not like Ellie and insist on going by Gabriel or Gabe. If you can't stand Gabe and don't have any other nn options, I'd keep looking for a full name for Ellie.
