I love this name, it's so beautiful. Everytime i heard the name i always picture Rachel Shelley (Who played a character named Helena on a tv show)
I have most definately considered using this name for a child- I've come up with the combos Helena Cecelia (honors my best friend) and Helena Eve.
Nickname wise, it depends on how you pronounce it. Hel-ay-nuh or Hel-eh-nah. You could use Lena/Layna for a nn

I'm fond of Helena (strictly pronounced "HELL-uh-nuh") -- I enjoy Nell and Nellie as occasional nicknames.

I picture it on an elegant, sophisticated woman. I think it's fine on a young child because after all, she'll be a young child only for a small part of her life, and anyway, that's what nns are for. Ellie and Lena come to mind.

My mom's mn is Helene, so I will most likely use Helena to honor her. I would love to see a little Helena running around.

I'm with you in that Helen doesn't appeal to me at all, however, I love Helena. I've only known one -- we grew up together. She pronounced it he-LAY-na. She was quite pretty, blonde, blue eyed, tall, smart, creative. I don't remember an awful lot about her personality, but she did the name justice. I mainly remember her because of her name, but I think Helena can represent just about anyone from any walk of life.

One other thing, Helena was the youngest of a family whose names began with J (John, Judith, Julia, John IV, Joseph). She told me once her parents considered naming her Jelena but decided against that. I thought that was interesting. I suppose the parents felt everyone would mispronounce Jelena.

Yeah, I myself like Helena a lot more than Helen.

You know, there's a town in Alabama named Helena, named after one of my relatives. I can't remember if her name was Helen or Helena, probably the latter because my family had some rather interesting names for girls sometimes...another one was Parthenia.

I knew an 12 year old Helena. Her nns were Hely, Lena, Lily, Len. I love the name.

I love the name Helena. I can see girls and women of all ages named this. As for nicknames, maybe Ele/Elle. Nell or Lena. But I prefer just Helena. As a side note, I pronounce it hay-LAY-nah, the Dutch way.
