The reason it would look incomplete to you without the e is you're prob'ly only used to seeing the girls' version 'cause you live in a rather non-French area where Michele/Michelle is common and
Michel isn't... much like we'll often use Daniele/Danielle as a girls' name and pronounce it that way, but the French also pronounce
Daniel that way on a boy. We're just not used to it if we don't have a lot of French around us.
Please also take into consideration your son's situation of always having to explain the matter if you inflict him with the girls' spelling.
